Building abroad comes down to one question: who holds the keys?

Here is why owners hand us a house they cannot stand next to every week.

The full-service contractor for owners who live abroad

Four reasons owners choose us for a build they will not supervise in person.

Fully bilingual, English-first

Every quote, contract, and site conversation happens in clear English. You talk directly to the people running your project, so decisions get made fast.

Licensed and CFIA-registered

Registered with the Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y Arquitectos, membership [your CFIA number]. Valid permits, legal builds, real accountability.

Transparent, fixed-scope pricing

A defined scope with a clear breakdown. Any change is approved in writing first. No silent overruns, no "extras" on the final invoice.

Real-time updates while abroad

Regular progress updates with photos and clear milestones. Being an absentee owner stops being a risk when you can watch every stage.

What it costs to build or remodel here

It depends on finish level, site, and design. You still deserve real numbers before you talk to anyone, so here is the working framework.

Comfortable build
$650 / m²

Well-built homes with quality mid-range finishes on accessible lots.

High-end finishes
$750 / m²

Premium materials, custom detailing, and elevated interior specification.

Luxury and architectural
$1,000+ / m²

Architectural builds, complex sites, and full luxury specification.

Absentee-owner maintenance plans

Scheduled care, not surprise call-outs. Priced by property size, pool, and visit frequency.

From $1,150 / month

Every quote breaks down what is inside the number: structure, electromechanical, finishes, permits. You compare real scope, not a headline price that grows later. Send us your lot and a rough idea, and we will give you a grounded estimate.

From first call to final handover

A clear process is what lets you build from another country with confidence. Here is exactly what happens.

  1. Consultation

We talk through your goals, lot, timeline, and budget, with honest feedback from the start.

  2. Design and fixed quote

Detailed design and a fixed-scope quote. You see the full breakdown before committing a dollar.

  3. Permits and CFIA

We handle CFIA registration and municipal permits. You do not navigate the bureaucracy, we do.

  4. Construction

Your project manager runs the build with regular photo updates and a direct line, any time zone.

  5. Handover and care

Final walkthrough, formal handover, then optional maintenance from the team that built it.

Hiring a contractor in Costa Rica, answered

How do I find a reliable general contractor in Costa Rica?+

The most reliable general contractors in Costa Rica are registered with the CFIA, work from a written fixed-scope contract, and communicate clearly in your language. Ask for the CFIA registration, ask for a detailed written quote, and watch how they answer. We are CFIA-registered and English-first, and we put the full scope in writing before you commit a cent.

Can I build a house in Costa Rica if I don't speak Spanish or live there?+

Yes. You can build without speaking Spanish or living in the country, as long as your contractor communicates in English and gives you real remote oversight. Most of our clients are absentee owners. Every quote, contract, and update happens in clear English, and you get photo reports plus a project manager you can reach in any time zone.

How much does it cost to build a house in Costa Rica?+

Quality custom homes on the coast generally run about $650 to $1,000+ per square meter, depending mostly on finish level and site conditions. A flat, accessible lot with mid-range finishes sits at the bottom of the range; an architectural build on a steep beachfront lot sits at the top. Every quote we send breaks the number down so you compare real scope.

What's included in turnkey home construction?+

Turnkey means one company handles the whole process (design, engineering, permits, construction, and finishes) so you show up to a finished home. That covers earthwork, structural engineering, CFIA permits, foundations, electromechanical systems, finishes, and often the pool and landscaping. You approve one design and one budget up front.

Do I need CFIA permits to build or remodel?+

Yes. Nearly all construction and significant remodeling in Costa Rica legally requires CFIA registration and municipal permits. Building without them can cause real problems at resale. We handle the entire permitting process as part of the project, so your build is fully legal and clean on paper from day one.

How do I avoid getting scammed by a contractor in Costa Rica?+

Hire a CFIA-registered contractor, never pay a large deposit against a vague quote, and tie every payment to a completed milestone in a written contract. Watch for red flags: no registration to show you, a round lump-sum with no breakdown, and reluctance to put changes in writing. If a contractor gets cagey about any of that, walk away.

How long does it take to build a house in Costa Rica?+

A custom home typically takes around [X to Y months] from permit approval to handover, plus lead time for design and permitting. Finish complexity, site access, and the rainy season are the main variables, and earthwork is slower in the wettest months. We give you a realistic date in the quote rather than a promise we cannot keep.

How do I take care of a vacation home when I don't live there?+

The best protection for an absentee home is a scheduled preventive maintenance plan that stays ahead of salt air, humidity, and sun. Our plans cover anti-corrosion protection, roof sealing before and after the green season, A/C and pump servicing, wood treatment, and inspections with photo reports sent straight to you. Small fixes on a schedule instead of one expensive failure.

Is it worth renovating my property for Airbnb, and what upgrades increase income?+

It is usually worth it when you focus on upgrades that raise occupancy and nightly rate: durable, guest-proof finishes, extra sleeping capacity, reliable A/C and Wi-Fi, and standout outdoor space that becomes your listing's hero shot. We tell you honestly which changes pay for themselves in bookings and which will not, so your budget goes where the return is.

Where does Costa Rica Builders work, and where should I build on the Gold Coast?+

We work nationwide from a hub in Huacas, Guanacaste, with fastest access to the Gold Coast: Tamarindo, Flamingo, Las Catalinas, Reserva Conchal, and Playa Grande. Being based in Huacas means we source materials and deploy crews quickly instead of paying beachfront overhead. Beyond Guanacaste, we build across the Central Valley, Pacific, and Caribbean.
